TextForge vs. Claude's Gmail integration
If you already use Claude's Gmail integration, you've probably wondered whether you still need TextForge. Short answer: they do completely different things. You might actually want both.
What each product actually does
Claude's Gmail integration connects Claude to your Google account so it can read your emails and calendar events. You ask Claude a question like "What did Sarah say about the Q3 budget?" and it pulls the relevant messages to answer you. It's a research tool for your inbox.
TextForge sits between your AI agent and your Gmail account. Your agent drafts an email through TextForge's API, you review it in a web interface, and only after you hit approve does it actually send, through your own Gmail, from your real email address. It's an approval layer for outgoing email.
Claude reads your email. TextForge writes it.
Side-by-side comparison

| Send email | No | Yes, after human approval, sent through your Gmail |
| Human approval step | N/A (read-only) | Every outgoing email requires your explicit approval |
| Works with any AI model | Claude only | Any LLM, any automation, any agent framework |
| API access | No, conversational only | REST API + MCP tools with scoped tokens |
| Sends from your address | N/A | Yes, Gmail OAuth, your real sender identity |
| Webhook notifications | No | Yes, Slack and custom webhooks on draft/send events |
How they handle your data
The data story is where things get interesting.
When Claude's Gmail integration retrieves your email data to answer a question, that data gets stored on Anthropic's servers. Their own documentation says so:
Retrieved data is stored on Anthropic servers and "retained with its associated chat, so you can delete any retrieved data by deleting the chat."

TextForge works differently. Our pass-through architecture was built around a straightforward idea: we can't leak data we don't have.
Email bodies from your Gmail threads are never stored. TextForge fetches them on-demand when you view a thread, then discards them. Attachments pass through validation and virus scanning but aren't retained either. Drafts are stored, because your agent created them here, but thread content from Gmail doesn't persist.
If someone breached TextForge's database, they would not find the contents of your sent or received emails. See our Data Security page for the full picture.
When Claude's Gmail integration is the right tool
Claude's Gmail integration is good at what it does: helping you find information that's already sitting in your inbox. If you need to search across old threads for a specific detail, get a summary of a long email chain, or cross-reference your calendar with what people said they'd do, Claude handles that well.
When TextForge is the right tool
TextForge is for a different job entirely: letting AI agents act on your behalf through email, with a safety net.
You need TextForge when your AI agent needs to send email (Claude's integration can't do this at all), when you want a human approval step on every outgoing message, when you use multiple AI models and need something that isn't locked to one vendor, when you're building programmatic automation rather than having a conversation, or when you care about your email content not persisting on a third party's servers.
Using them together
They actually work well side by side. Use Claude's Gmail integration to research and understand incoming email. Use TextForge to draft and send your responses, with your agent doing the writing and you keeping final say.
A typical workflow:
- Ask Claude "What are the open action items from the Acme thread?"
- Claude reads your inbox and gives you a summary
- Your agent drafts reply emails through TextForge's API
- You review each draft, tweak if needed, and approve
- TextForge sends through your Gmail, from your address
Nothing leaves your outbox without you saying so.
